There are numerous credits and inspirations for this website. Much of it has just come from visitors' comments and feedback. A couple of the methods described within were taken from a wax museum that I visited in Newport, OR, but the rest are all to be found in the books listed below. I've done my best to include everything and everyone that had some sort of input, but things are always forgoten, so I'll fix them as soon as I discover them.

The photographs used for the Pear and the Head Crusher were taken by Marcello Bertoni, Florence, and are Copyright © 1985 by Qua d' Arno.
The rest of the art on this site (so far) is either mine or public domain.

Malleus Malleficarum was gotten from a transcription project by Wicasta Lovelace and Christie Rice. You really should check out the rest at The Malleus Maleficarum Online Edition.
Bernard Gui on the Beguins and Clareno on Torture were translated by David Burr. The link I formerly had was defunct, but this new one seems to be in good order.

The original source for all of this is a book titled simply, "Inquisition". It may be out of print, but if you are able to find a copy, I'd highly recommend picking it up.
Another huge source is The History of Torture by Brian Innes. It can be ordered from Amazon.com. |

First, I'd like to say just four things:
1. I don't like to torture animals or little children.
2. I don't like to torture adults either.
3. I'm not a coalitionist.
4. I don't believe in forced confession.
That covers the basics, so now I'll expand. For those of you who have been coming here for the years that the site has been up, I hope you're pleased with the expansion. I almost didn't do it, and just let the thing sit forever, slowly drawing in more and more viewers... but that would have been such a waste. I wanted it to grow, and I want it to grow still more, but for that you can see the Submit section. For those of you who are new, and wodering why in the world I've created such a thing, let this be your answer: Just Because. It's not here to slam on religion. It's not here to promote religion. It's not here to promote torture. You see, everyone has that little spot, buried somewhere deep inside, that loves this sort of thing. I'm not talking about those who like to practice it, because that's another thing altogether, and this site isn't here to promote that either. I'm simply talking about the natural tendancy toward morbid curiosity.
That's why this site is here.

First, I would like to say that I am not involved in this site because I'm sick or warped, I'm involved because I find this is a good place to express my "dark" thoughts and ideas. I believe we all have "dark" facets to our personalities, whether we care to admit it or not. I can best describe this as coming upon a horrible car accident, and slowing down to get a glimpse of a broken, bloody body lying helplessly next to the road.
Although a lot of the content in this site may seem brutal, it is fact and reality that torture has and does exist tosay. I don't of course promote or involve myself in such rituals, however I do find reading about them, writing about them and discussing them quite fascinating.
If you have found this site, and are reading this... you too much share with me these same inner demons.

All descriptive texts on this site, as well as the short story Revelation are copyright © by the authors, and blah, blah. If you want to send email, whether it be to say how disturbed we are, or to comment on the site, you go right ahead. |

So here's your chance... Since I want this site to flourish and expand, if you're an artist, writer, or anything else, and you have something you think would fit right in here, let me know.
I'm accepting submissions for anything that keeps with the theme, and can be presented in the format of this site. You can let me know the details by writing to inquisitor@inquisitionchamber.com. |

Before I had a guestbook, I received a nice collection of comments about the site over the time it's been up. I've listed a few of them below for you.
The first one on the list is a review I got in the Halloween edition of the Netsurfer Digest.
"Halloween is supposed to give the devil his due. And this site does - in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The perverse torture techniques of the 14th, 15th, and 16th century Catholic Inquisition are so vividly described at this site, our Netsurfer went on a crying jag. Great graphics and razor-sharp literary devices, particularly irony, make the grizzly, fabulously ingenious methods of inflicting physical and psychological pain so palpable, you just might not be able to crawl through every single torture chamber. This ain't textbook facts and figures, it's a harrowing tale of hell on earth and one of those fascinating, ghastly reminders of the human predicament."
"Wrong. I don't want to talk about it."
"Sick to be sure."
"...delightfully spooky."
"Charming." (There was no sarcasm involved)
"I appreciated your detail, your descriptions, the darkness of your site... without the gore that is all too commonplace. Thank you for your effort."
"I have been fascinated by the subjects you so skillfully present. The text greatly adds to the effect."
"My cup is not full. I want more."
"A work of art, I'm impressed."
"Where's the rest of the "Halls of Learning"? I could have hours of fun with a wire coathanger and a car battery."
So please, send me your comments. I know I'm just asking for it here. |
