Torture has been around since at least the times of the Egyptians (circa 1300 BC), and very probably earlier. It has occured in many cultures all over the world, and is still practiced today (despite the efforts of Amnesty International). For some cultures it served a "purpose", whereas for others it was just a way of life.

While the Church may be the most well known for its use of torture, it in fact adopted the practice from the legal system itself. A procedure which under the Roman law, was referred to as the quaestio...
